A new report from a nonprofit organization says the material can be made from a mix of fibers, which could provide lightweight insulation for the first time.
The nonprofit, which is calling itself The Lightweight Building Institute, says it is using materials from the American Academy of Engineering and is building its own prototypes.
The materials are designed to provide the best insulation for fire-proofing systems and other lightweight structures.
The report says the research suggests it is possible to fabricate these materials for a fraction of the cost of materials commonly used to make insulation for existing structures.
In addition to the new materials, the institute says it has begun work on new models of the materials that could be used in the future for building materials.
The institute says its new models can be manufactured with relatively low temperatures and are lighter than traditional insulation.
